I really loved the complexity of these main characters. They’re
both so damaged but trying to persevere, and there’s something really quite
endearing about how they’re managing everything. Elliot is about as charming as
it gets, but he’s got a lot to work on with himself. Then Fern’s family life is
complicated for sure, but she is so strong and sure of what she’s doing in
life. I really liked her character. She’s tough in that she’s able to go up
against whatever gets thrown at her in life and yet she still makes it through,
but she’s not so tough that she’s cold or anything. I enjoyed how likable her
character turned out to be.
The story itself is solidly written, and I love the
accidental pregnancy trope here. It works to solidify the plotline, and I liked
how it was a catalyst for Elliot and Fern’s evolution. I do wish there was more
development shown between them during the first part of the book, though. I
guess I just wanted their interactions during the first several months of their
working together to be more focused upon, but the way it all works out in the
end is satisfying for sure. How they worked through their issues and navigated
their life-changing news was well done, and overall I enjoyed the way it all
turned out.
Also, I love Fern’s brothers! They were such a fun addition
to the story and added the right amount of laughter-inducing moments in a book
that could’ve gotten more serious. I loved their lightness, and the way they
played off Elliot and Fern was perfect, especially the triplets. They sort of
gave off Three Stooges vibes at times, and I couldn’t stop smiling at their parts
in the book.
This is a fun and romantic book that deals with some heavier
topics, and Elliot and Fern’s story is a great addition to the series.
