Rebecca Jenshak’s Broken Hearts is somehow equal parts cute, fun, and hot, and it totally works.
Broken Hearts is Rhett’s story in the third installment of
the Campus Nights series. We first met him as a quiet hockey player at Valley U
who was involved in a six-year, long-distance relationship. Now, he’s a newly
single guy ready to make the most of the rest of his college experience. After
an incredibly embarrassing encounter, he winds up meeting Sienna, who’s also a
senior and a figure skater and trying to figure out what to do about life after
college and skating. They meet when Rhett literally comes crashing into
Sienna’s life. Rhett’s quickly smitten with Sienna, but she’s definitely more
reserved for her own reasons. Broken Hearts takes us through their journey with
all the ups and downs that they face both alone and together.
Generally, I like Jenshak’s way of writing her characters.
I’m always left feeling like I got to know them because of how realistic she writes
them to be. Also, I usually like their personalities and backstories and find
them to be good fits for one another. But Rhett and Sienna? I don’t know how
else to put it…I LOVED THEM! Like they were the perfect characters for this
story. Rhett is beyond cute, and the way he cares about those around him and
especially Sienna? I was swooning! Then there’s Sienna, and she was probably my
favorite heroine of all of Jenshak’s leading ladies. Sweet but full of
personality and drive, she’s the kind of character where in the real world
you’d want to be her friend. I adored
getting to know these characters in this book. Now, I can’t wait for the next
book in the series.
Some of the subject matter in Broken Hearts was serious, and
there was a turn I didn’t expect the book to take. But, I think that makes for
a more lifelike story in the sense that they had their real issues. Despite all
that though, the story still had so much lightheartedness and plenty of comical
moments. I like that with Broken Hearts we get both serious issues and some
fun.
I absolutely recommend this book to anyone that likes a book
that will make them laugh and swoon at the same time but that has just the
right amount of drama, too.
