The Kiss List by Maya Hughes

Hughes has absolutely outdone herself with this one! The Kiss List is as charming as it is sweet with just the right amount of angst to keep it all interesting and make it a totally unputdownable book.

The second in the Fulton U Rivals series focuses on Cole, the hottie football player, and Kennedy, the cool girl with dreams of working in fashion. After one disastrous night months before and a lot treating each other poorly as a result of that night, they hatch a plan to win the Puppy Love contest at school and prove to everyone how much they “really” love one another pretty much just because there’s no other option for either of them, and they both want the grand prize. They have mutual friends, and their ploy seems workable to them, so they go for it and begin to act as the nauseatingly adorable couple nobody knew was a thing at the start. What begins as total disdain for each other turns into something else eventually, and this book traces that change.

I absolutely love Cole and Kennedy! They’re 100% my new favorite couple of Hughes’, and their chemistry is off the charts hot. Their fighting and even the smallest of interactions between them have so much passion, and I couldn’t get enough of seeing how they play off one other. The way their story jumps off the pages is addictive. Separately, Cole and Kennedy are fantastic characters, too. They both come from very rocky backgrounds, and it makes it so that everything they do in the story is informed by that.

Something else I love about this book/series/Hughes books is that there’s this real sense of togetherness and loyalty between the people in their friend group. These secondary characters give the whole story/series universe a deeper feeling, and I love how they fuel the story when needed. But, for however awesome Cole and Kennedy’s friends are, Hughes does a phenomenal job at including a villain in the form of Cole’s coach. He’s horrible. Like if you’ve read Kiss and Tell, you’re going to despise Mikelson even more now. He’s literally that awful, although his inclusion in the series makes for amazing tension in the story. Even though he’s not a likeable character, he serves a purpose, and his character is well done.

The Kiss List is a definite must read and it’s got a cuteness about it. At the same time, there’s such an underlying deeper story for both the main characters, and I couldn’t get enough. I’m so excited for Ezra’s story next!
