Wild Love by Rebecca Jenshak

Oh how I’ve been waiting for this book! Wild Love is the final book in the Campus Nights series, and it does not disappoint!

This is Maverick and Dakota’s story, and it starts with Maverick starting his first season as a professional NHL player and Dakota struggling to find an internship for the summer. Maverick catches wind of this and intercedes on her part and gets her a coveted internship with the Minnesota Wildcats, which is the hockey team he’s signed to. Dakota is elated until she finds out that it’s unpaid and she has to back out of it. When Maverick finds out about that, he does what he seems to do where Dakota is concerned and fixes that problem by indirectly (but directly at the same time) getting her paid by working on an advertising campaign that he’s a part of. He leaves out a lot of details though, and that eventually does him no favors. Through all of this, their relationship goes from strictly friends to something better and grows even more from there.

Jenshak has a knack for creating characters that you’ll just wind up completely wrapped up in, and she did that with Maverick and Dakota. We’ve known both characters throughout the entire series, and I loved Maverick from the first time he was introduced. He’s fun and goofy, but clearly he’s got some below-the-surface issues with his family. He’s the sort of character that you cannot help but love right away. And Dakota? I really grew to love her in this book. I liked her okay in the previous books, but I was wowed by how much I started to like her immediately in this book. She turned out to be this badass, super cool girl but with this sweetness and vulnerability that I totally got into. I definitely enjoyed seeing these two navigate their changing relationship and how they dealt with the transition from college kids to full-blown adults.

The writing and pacing of the story are well done, too. Jenshak created a world for this series that is both engaging and addictive, and I think so much of that has to do with her ability to fully incorporate secondary characters and make them necessary for the story but in an interesting way that feels wanted and not more like filler material. All the parts of this story, and in the series as a whole, were necessary and included at the right time, which makes for a book/series that I didn’t want to put down.

Wild Love is fun, romantic, and pulls at your heartstrings. Maverick and Dakota’s story is so satisfying, and it’s the perfect finale to the series!
