The Last Eligible Billionaire is exactly what you’d expect from Pippa Grant in the best way possible. It’s so funny and yet charming, and I couldn’t get enough of Hayes and Begonia.
In this book, we meet Hayes as the newly appointed CFO to
his family’s movie/entertainment business who’s essentially on the run from his
overbearing family and their constant and unwanted matchmaking, and Begonia is the
recently divorced high school art teacher who’s on an adventure/vacation with
only her beloved and goofy dog Marshmallow. They first encounter each other in a very unexpected way that begins with
Hayes thinking there’s an intruder in his vacation home in Maine. Hayes hasn’t
been to the estate in quite a long time, and when he enters the home, it looks
like a disaster. There are dishes and clothes everywhere, and it’s a general
mess. As he investigates further, he eventually finds the culprit in his bathroom
having a bit of a spa moment complete with a facemask, hair dye, and in the
middle of waxing. Begonia thinks she’s rented the amazing home to have all by
herself, but it turns out that’s not exactly the case when Hayes turns up
wondering why she’s there and threatening to call the police. Unfortunately for
Hayes, Marshmallow takes off with his phone and accidentally calls his mother
who then decides she needs to come to the remote island property with yet
another socialite in tow in an effort to get him married off. Very quickly a
plan is concocted, and Begonia finds herself relegated to spending the next
couple weeks with Hayes as his pretend girlfriend to get his family off his
back. They go from total strangers to being in a fake relationship to friends
and more over the course of the book.
First and foremost, this book is hilarious. Like laugh out loud
until your eyes are watering funny. Literally from the first chapter I couldn’t
stop smiling. I mean, the way they first meet? I don’t want to ruin it for you,
but OMG it is too good! The comedy flows throughout this book even in the small
moments like when Begonia is, well, her quirky Begonia self or the interactions
between Hayes and Marshmallow. The dog is his own little character in the book,
too, and it works so well to sort of push the storyline along.
This book isn’t all funny though, and there’s definitely an undercurrent
of more serious things that both characters have been dealing with. They’re both
at a certain place in their lives and looking for a change, hence them both
finding themselves at Hayes’ home that is less than easy to get to. Throughout
the course of the story, both have pretty significant transformations, and I
enjoyed the way it all unfolded. Also, I loved seeing how different Hayes and
Begonia are from one another, but the way both characters play off each other
and how their story progresses works.
This book shouldn’t be missed. It’s an amazing romcom that’s
not just comedic but so sweet and steamy, too. Grant’s outdone herself with
this one.
