When she’s only 13, Amore witnesses the brutal deaths of her
mother and the man she thought was her father and is sent to live with her
biological father in New York. Unaware of her real parentage until that point,
Amore is a child thrown into a world she doesn’t know and is surrounded by very
different people than she’s used to. Not long after she arrives in New York,
she encounters a rival crime family, the Russo’s. Quite a lot happens, but she
finds who will become her best friend, Adriano, and his brother Santino. Years
later, Amore’s relationships and role has changed, and she’s a far more formidable
woman. Eventually, Santino notices Amore as more than a just a kid, and she
grows as a person, too. Throughout this story, we see their relationship change
drastically.
Something Winners does exceptionally well is that she
creates these tortured characters that become so much more than what their circumstances
lead you to believe they’ll become. Amore is a perfect example of that, and I
think she’s now become my favorite of Winner’s characters. She’s a child when
we first meet her, and we get to see how her character evolves so completely in
such a wonderful way. Through the course of the book, Amore goes from an innocent
child to the woman she was always supposed to be despite everything being thrown
at her. She goes through so much, but she remains the sort of character that I empathized
with and rooted for.
Also, I love how throughout this book I seriously kept being
surprised by the storyline and plot twists. I don’t want to give anything away,
but I didn’t want to put this down simply because I needed to see how it all unraveled.
Amore’s story is so multilayered, and the men in her life play such an
important role, but none of it or them is clearcut. This is an incredibly exciting
book, and I couldn’t get enough of the twists and turns Winners wove into it.
Exciting with a cast of interesting characters, I absolutely
recommend this book. I love how compelling the characters are and how the story
evolves, and it’s definitely a book that’s hard to put down.
