Hilarious, sweet, and sassy, The Player Hater is a seriously fun book. It’s charming and oh so entertaining, and I didn’t want it to end.
It starts off with Juliet being essentially coerced by her best
friend Mia into going on a weekend trip to get to better know Mia’s boyfriend
and his best friend. Mia says they want them to all get along with each other,
and this is the way to do it. Fast forward and their vacation isn’t all palm
trees and drinks with mini umbrellas like Juliet was expecting. Instead, she’s
faced with spending time glamping it up in the great outdoors, which does not
make her happy. Add to that the fact that she assumes that Mia’s football-player
boyfriend Thad and his best friend and former football player Davis are little
more than vapid players, and, well, the weekend starts off a bit rough for
Juliet and especially Davis that’s stuck in the same camper with her. On the
other hand, Davis arrives not seeming to know what he’s in for with Juliet with
hilarious consequences. This story focuses on Davis and Juliet’s first interactions
with each other during that weekend and how their strained connection turns
into more.
These characters are amazingly funny. The interactions they
all share are beyond entertaining, especially between Davis and Juliet. I love
how they poke and prod each other, and their almost need to irk one another made
me laugh. Their shared moments are filled with awkwardness at times, and the cringe
factor of some of those instances made it all so much better (think embarrassing
things that someone you think is hot that you basically just met does not need
to know about you).
And Davis is my new favorite romcom character for sure. He’s
so sweet and cute and witty but with a dash of silliness and vulnerability. I
could not get enough of him. The way he interacts with Juliet is comical, but
then it’s also so sweet at times. Then, consider how he is with Thad and his sister
and niece, and he becomes so swoon worthy. He’s the perfect counterpart to
Juliet’s more buttoned up character, and they work so well together.
This is a fantastic romcom that will make you smile and literally
laugh out loud. Davis and Juliet’s relationship is sexy and amusing, and I
cannot wait until the next installment of the series comes out.
