Campus Legend by Jennifer Sucevic

Sweet, steamy, and laced with angst, I couldn’t have imagined a better ending to this series. Asher and Lola’s story is exactly what I wanted it to be, and I couldn’t get enough of it.

Asher and Lola aren’t anywhere near friendly when the book begins, but a series of events put them directly in each other’s paths and they end up sort of needing to be able to get along together. Their partnership is definitely unexpected, seeing as they generally regard one another with a level of teasing and/or disdain. He’s the incredibly popular and charming football player with a promising future in the NFL, and she’s struggling to keep her head above water with having to burn the candle at both ends day in and day out. Little by little, their tense relationship becomes friendship and then later something more.

These characters are wonderfully written, and I was pleasantly surprised at how endearing Asher is. He’s far more complex than others seem to believe him to be, and there’s a genuine kindness that I wasn’t expecting prior to reading this book. I love a misunderstood hero, and that exactly what Asher is. And I adored Lola! She’s feisty and a lovely person at the same time, and then she’s had to overcome so much and is still dealing with a lot. I loved her strength for sure, but the way her vulnerability was depicted was even more endearing. I appreciate that both these characters aren’t necessarily what I anticipated them to be at the start, and I think that’s what’s made me enjoy them and how their story plays out that much more.

While I love the romance that builds throughout the book, what got to me even more so is Lola’s rather non-existent relationship with her father. I won’t give anything away, but I literally just kept thinking wow (not in a great way). There’s such a difficult history there, and it all informs Lola’s present. What she goes through is heartbreaking, but then the way Asher is in response to it all is completely moving. Really, it just further solidified how much I love these two as a couple.

This romance is nothing less than touching and beautifully complicated but adorable and steamy, too. Asher and Lola are now my favorite characters by this author, and I absolutely recommend their book.
