When the book starts, we find Shelby on the eve of her
wedding to Ace’s best friend, Joseph. I won’t give anything away, so all I’ll say
is that something gets found out that changes the course of that ill-fated
wedding. Shelby still goes on her honeymoon, though, and she’s invited her best
friend Ace to come along with. What starts off as two friends mourning the
events of a wedding that never was turns into a very different sort of
relationship between them.
I love these two together! First, I enjoy a good friends-to-lovers
romance, and the way Shelby and Ace’s characters developed together was just so
organic. This isn’t a long, drawn-out sort of slow burn, and it makes sense in
this story. They’ve been friends for ages, and now both single will they become
something else? I like the touch of uncertainty that the characters give off
where the other is concerned. It makes them sort of feel more real that way. And
their chemistry is palpable, which adds to the idea that they’re so right for
one another. There are a lot of hot moments in this book, and I adore how Shelby
and Ace went from friends to so much more than they were counting on at the beginning
of the book.
Plus, Shelby’s whole family is so funny! They’re amusing and
push the storyline forward as secondary characters, which lends to the pacing
of the book. Their existence not only had me laughing at times, but I love that
sense of camaraderie between Shelby and her family, too. They’re truly there
for her, which is so lovely, and writing secondary characters that add to the
momentum and gravity to a story is something this author does so well.
This book is filled with humor and steam, and Shelby and Ace’s
story couldn’t have been more fun (with a side of drama here and there). I love
these two together, and I can’t wait for the next installment in this series.
