Kendall Ryan’s The Rookie is a sweet sports romance with a hometown family twist. For as sweet as it is though, it has plenty of steamy moments that will keep you reading, too.
The Rookie is the third installment of Ryan’s Looking to
Score series. It begins with Logan being put on a lengthy suspension from
playing hockey due to his aggression and anger issues on the ice after the
passing of his father the previous summer. Then, there’s Summer, who is tasked
with counseling Logan to get him back to playing without all the fighting and belligerence.
So, with this job her hopes of it helping her new sports counseling business,
she follows Logan back to his family home in Colorado. Summer is met with
kindness from the Tate family, but she’s less than welcome according to Logan.
However, rather quickly she charms her way into Logan’s good graces just by
being herself and being honest with him, and their story really takes off.
First, I really like this series. It’s sweet but with a bit
of sexiness, and it always leaves me with a smile on my face. This story
develops a bit fast, but it does so in that cute, romantic way that works for
me. I like how Ryan gives us characters we root for and feel a connection to,
but then she peppers in just enough steamy moments to keep it interesting in
that romance novel sort of way.
Also, I enjoyed the backwoods/hometown backdrop to this
story that includes the rest of Logan’s family, too. It gives both characters
more dimension in the sense that we get a real sense of where both Logan and
Summer are coming from, whether it’s their troubles or strengths. Certainly,
Logan’s father’s death not long before the story begins provides the catalyst
for his behavior and therefore Summer’s introduction to his life. Then, the
connections Summer make with his family bring up her life’s issues and adds to
her character. It’s the pleasant/cute way Ryan weaves it all together that
makes Logan and Summer’s story work for me.
In the end, if you’ve read either of the other books in the
series or are just in the mood for good, sweet story between two characters
with plenty of chemistry, don’t pass on The Rookie. You’ll enjoy it for its
likeable characters and swoon-worthy moments.
