The Heart of Us is filled with plenty of sweet and steamy moments but has plenty of drama, too. It’s the sort of book that’s hard to put down, and the way the story plays out is so satisfying.
The fourth installment of Kennedy Fox’s Love in Isolation
series focuses on Easton and Tatum. He’s the good-looking surf shop owner, and
she’s his secretive and seemingly shy at first employee of his that lives
across the hall from him above the shop. Very quickly we find that the reason
Tatum prefers to keep to herself is that she’s on the run from her abusive
(soon-to-be ex) husband who happens to be a detective back home. Somehow, he
finds out that Tatum is in Florida, and soon thereafter there’s a fire in Easton’s
store. The two then flee to his parents’ vacation house on the coast, and from
there their relationship goes from employer/employee to something very
different.
These characters are everything! Tatum is so realistic with
her worries and self-consciousness (largely due to that awful ex), and she’s
the sort of character that you’ll naturally want to empathize with. Obviously,
she’s dealing with a lot of trauma from her past, and you definitely get a real
sense of her heartbreak. Then there’s Easton, and he is probably one of the
most genuine and kind male characters I’ve read in a long while. He’s sweet and
patient with Tatum and yet so passionate. One of the things I adore about
Kennedy Fox’s books is that their characters, especially the guys, are always
more complex than I feel like I’m used to. Easton doesn’t disappoint, and I
love the way these two connect with one another.
Another thing I enjoyed about this story is the level of intensity.
Like despite the beauty of the setting and the sweetness of the shared moments
between Easton and Tatum, there’s an undercurrent of tension that fuels the
plotline. There’s the anxiety that Tatum’s ex brings to the situation, but then
there’s also Tatum’s insecurities and the things that have happened in her past
that are always there. There’s a lot to unravel with this story, and it’s well
done.
This is a fantastic addition to the series, and I couldn’t
get enough of Easton and Tatum. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!
