Fun, sweet, steamy, and with plenty of drama, this book is a wonderful addition to Quinn’s world of characters. Right from the start, I was intrigued by the characters and the situation they’ve found themselves in, and I didn’t want to put it down.
When the story begins, Maddox and Kinsley have been best
friends for forever. He’s the big-time professional ballplayer, and she’s the sweet
girl next door type that’s been stuck in their hometown until she gets the
opportunity to move to Chicago. She winds up rooming with Maddox, and she ends
up flipping his normal life upside down a bit with her eclectic ways. They not
only need to figure out how to live with each other, but they also need to manage
their changing emotions. This is a friends to lovers story, and we get to see
how their relationship grows into something much different than what it’s been in
the past.
I love a bad-boy hero, and Maddox is exactly that unless it
comes to Kinsley. She’s able to take this gruff athlete from tough guy to teddy
bear, and it’s so sweet when it happens. Maddox’s complex character was
interesting, and I definitely enjoyed seeing the changes in him throughout the
book. And Kinsley might be a bit goofy, but she’s super cute. The way these two
navigated their changing relationship was filled with plenty of very steamy but
sweet moments and some very angsty ones, too.
At one point, Maddox and Kinsley’s relationship takes a turn
for the worst, and it made me a bit emotional. But, the way the author moves
the characters forward from that point is so good. I love some good old-fashioned
groveling, and this book has exactly that. It never makes much sense to me in
books when a character does something to another main character and in like two
seconds everything is fine again. Not in this book though! We get to see that
character have to figure out how to right the situation, and I couldn’t get
enough.
If you love a good friends to lovers and/or sports romance, The
Change Up is for you. It’s got sweet and comical moments along with steaminess
and drama, and it makes for yet another must read from Meghan Quinn.
