Sweet and charming with plenty of comedic moments, Shopping for a Highlander is the kind of story you simply devour. It’s a fun romantic comedy, and you’re not going to want to skip it.
Hamish is the good-looking Scottish soccer player that got
quite the reputation because of his…well, let’s just call them off-field
antics. Amy’s just graduated with her MBA, and her first job is to keep Hamish
in check, which means keeping jersey chasers away so there won’t be another
scandal. They’ve known each other for a while, since Amy’s sister and his
cousin are married. They each harbor feelings for the other, but only when they’re
forced to be together so much do those feelings become something else. Through
this slow burn of a story, we get to see how their relationship progresses in
the funniest of ways.
Whether it’s Hamish and Amy or the supporting characters, the
way the characters play off each other is brilliantly hilarious. They’re all a
bit cheeky and have big personalities that add to the humor of the story and
help to propel the story forward. And they way Hamish and Amy are with each
other? It’s funny but sweet, and I couldn’t get enough of their constant bantering.
They play off one another so well, because he makes her feel while she makes
him think. They’re opposites in so many ways, but for me it adds that level of
necessary difference to make the book comedic.
Also, the pacing for this story and how it’s written totally
works. There aren’t any lulls with too much being explained, but at the same
time there’s enough given that the book moves forward quickly. Yes, it’s a slow
burn, but it’s not done in a way where you’re wondering when we’ll get to the
good stuff. I feel like all the time it takes for the story to finally get to
the point where the characters sort of figure it all out is necessary. I’m a
big fan of when a writer draws the plotline out, but it’s entertaining and
flows well.
All in all, I absolutely recommend this book. It’s cute but
clever and is going to having you laughing.
